Almost a fifth of the world's population lives in India, but the country has access to only 4% of the world’s fresh water resources. Limited surface water resources have led to an increased dependence on groundwater and rapidly declining groundwater tables.
Mumbai’s exploding population growth creates unprecedented challenges, among which unequal distribution of water and sanitation have been the most pressing issues.
Often substandard quality of water and lack of sanitation is responsible for increase in water-related disease outbreaks in Mumbai. The reason for water deficits and unequal distribution of safe water is not due to limited water availability but due to inefficient management of water supply. The issues include lack of water distribution system in urban poor areas, non-revenue water losses due to pilferage, leakage, and defaulters, contamination of water due to sewage infiltration and encroachments in pipeline area, breakage of old pipelines etc. It is necessary to develop a road map for equitable distribution of safe water within Mumbai. The roadmap may involve review of decisions /policies, expansion of service coverage, enhancement of distribution network in terms of rehabilitation of water mains, replacement of water meters etc. revisiting water tariffs, reducing the list of defaulters, leakage and pilferages and preventing post treatment contamination of water and having checks on the quality.

The city of Mumbai comforts it's inhabitants with easy access to resources. On one hand labour, power and water are easily available, but on the other hand, the city faces an exploding population crisis. At present state, the water supply in Mumbai works well due to abundance of monsoons, but new means of reserving water are necessary in order to also maintain these levels in the future.
To reflect the various aspects of water in Mumbai/India and to display hope that there will be enough water for many generations to come, an art work will be installed. It expresses the paradox of a shortage of portable water vis-a-vis the floods from the overflowing Mithi river. Another aspect is the queues of women waiting to fill their buckets and pots with water. Additionally, the art work also reflects the lack of education and wants to rise awareness regarding environmental issues and water wastage.
